The Fall Trend Report
08.26.11Fall is one of the most inspiring, creative, invigorating times of year – most especially in the fashion industry. As we transition into a new season, novel trends are emerging and classic styles are resurfacing.
Cotton Candy contributor, stylist and fashion journalist Jessica Moazami gives us five innovative approaches to the changing fashion landscape this time of year.
No. 1 Electric Blue
With vivid colors dominating the runway this autumn and winter season, it’s going to be a hard look for fashion lovers to resist. However my personal favorite coming down the catwalk was electric blue. Whether it’s cobalt and royal or sapphire and cerulean, it’s an eye-catching pop of color that’s both vibrant and intense. This directional color was seen in both Rag & Bone and 3.1 Philip Lim shows from knitwear to silks and dresses to jackets. If you are only going to wear one bold color this season make it this one.

No. 2 Mod
60s mod – this is a personal favorite fall trend.
The look is more early minimal, Mary Quant 60’s and less psychedelic, hippy power 60’s. Think Twiggy, Mary-Jane’s, A-line mini dresses, Mods and Swinging London. To capture this trend you need to stick to a couple of key rules: keep it streamlined, minimal and most importantly fuss-free. The fashionphiles addressing this trend brilliantly are Emma Watson and Michelle Williams especially with their pixie hair.

No. 3 Graphic Prints
Plaids, checks, tartans, geometrics shapes, stripes, polka dots, paisley, animal prints – you name it, and it was on the fall runways. A strong and bold trend for the season but what keeps this look from those of the past is the pairing of opposing patterns. Etro did this brilliantly with a dress that nearly incorporated all the prints above as well as having a runway collection full of diverse designs and textiles.
Designers: Thakoon, Rag & Bone and Etro
No. 4 Contrasting Sleeves
Opposing looks, causal paired with smart, feminine with masculine are must haves. Contrasting sleeves trend are a favorite this year as designers incorporate the trend on jackets, coats, shirts even dresses with long sleeves in a different fabric, typically in leather or a knit for a fitted look. Contrasting sleeves can add an edge when done properly. Alternatively, the style also can easily be dressed down. For a look you can complete yourself, just add a jacket with leather sleeves to a basic t-shirt and jeans.
Designers: Celine, Etro, 3.1 Phillip Lim
No. 5 Boy Meets Girl
It’s not surprising that this trend is back in fashion as we’ve already had the boyfriend jeans, cardigans and Oxfords; an androgynous look was just bound to happen.
It’s all about the great cut, fabrics and colors combined with sharp and masculine tailoring. You can wear it layered or in a more minimal method. There is even a tuxedo sub-trend happening, perfect for a glamorous evening event.
Designers: Paul Smith, Chanel, Gianfranco Ferrè, DKNY and Stella McCartney
