California Charm

Seaside sass graces the California coast. But for anyone who wants the the coastal ambiance no matter the space or place, know that your home can be a beach beauty all on its own.

Cotton Candy Magazine® tapped New York based interior designer Marlaina Teich  to show us how to create paradisaical ocean side style with ease.

“Start with the color of the walls and floors. Warm shades of white on the walls and ceilings paired with walnut stained floors resembles the sand and wood that washes onto the beach.

Select durable, comfortable fabrics for your upholstered pieces that have a natural weave, such as a cotton. Slipcovered pieces mean you don’t have to worry about nestling into the chair or sofa if you’re still damp from the pool. The slipcovers can be easily removed and cleaned.

Natural materials such as wood, sisal and grass cloth give a casual, textural feel to any room. Try layering a sisal area rug on top of a wall-to-wall carpet or wood floor to give an authentic touch to the room. Or if you are hands on, place a few rolls of grasscloth onto a focal wall to generate the perfect backdrop.

Bring in sea blues and greens for a pop of hue. The colors are are a common trend, so expect any local store with have accessories in these colors. Think of adding an aqua colored ceramic lamp to the end table as well.

Bring in a subtle boating theme with linen drapery panels. Linen adds a soft and airy quality and looks heavenly in cream, especially when balanced against a light-blue painted wall.

Finally, never underestimate the power of the flea market finds. Display a collection of collectibles found locally in a grouping on a wall. Solitary antiques may look old and disconnected but grouped together they become an  interesting, fun focal point.”
