HGTV Bedroom Makeovers

11.01.10

Time to change things up in your home. And one of the best places to start is in the bedroom. The bedroom can be considered the most personal room in the house. So your comfort is important. But if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the idea of remodeling, HGTV.com’s Erinn Valencich is here to help.  Here are four great ways to give your bedroom a much-needed makeover.

Eco-Friendly Cool

When creating an eco- friendly look, choose fabrics that are natural fibers.  The more you can use recycled materials or woods in the furnishings, the better.

Eco-Friendly Cool

Choose a cool, calming tonal color palette of soft blue-gray, taupe and a pop of orange.   Dark woods accent the lighter upholstered furniture, while a Knoll inspired cabinet in white lacquer creates a clean entry into the room.

The bed is the main event in the eco-friendly bedroom.  The shades are soft white and crisp.  In a modern room, window treatments should be kept to a minimal.

French Motif

The French bedroom is all about romance.  A classic four poster bed is the perfect start.  A highly arched headboard and twisted posts create a romantic ambience.  Behind the bed is a fabric panel, which adds to the boudoir effect.  The overall colors in the room range from watery blues to rich peacock.

Layered toss pillows on the bed evoke a vintage feel, as if they had been collected over time.  Heavy brocade fabrics are classically French.

French Motif

At the foot of the bed you can place a long, low table. This whimsical placement can give the sense of a classic bench at the foot and also allows for decorative objects to be on display as well.  The drapery in this room should be full and elegant.

Caribbean Feel

Palm trees and coconuts are not the only ways to create the Caribbean feel.  Pitched wood ceilings and natural wood floors play well to the feeling of a chic island hut. The wallpaper is the first selection in this room. A dramatic black and silver flocked paper from Manuel Canovas is a great choice.  Leaves and flowers cascading up the walls can be an elegant take on the tropics.

Caribbean Feel

With such a bold pattern on the walls, the drapery, rug and other items in the room should remain relatively neutral.  To bring in more of the beach feel, accent the bedroom with a soft blue, evoking a feeling of water.  Evoke island flavor in the tones of the bedding and draperies. Try silk with small embroidered concentric circles on them, and a sheer in the same color keeps the look consistent.

Southern Flair

For a Southern-inspired bedroom, create an elegant room in rich tones, possibly of coral, rust and hunter green.

Rugs can be a great element in this look.  It’s traditional pattern is one you would find quite regularly in the South. A soft palatte of cream, gold and rust set the tone for the room while not being overpowering in pattern as some traditional rugs can be.  Stick with the more muted tones for this style of rug.

Southern Flair

A flared out headboard can give the room character.  Place a bench at the foot of the bed, which can be a great place to hide extra pillows and blankets.

Plants can work for this style as well. Purple orchids and cut flowers can give this room a bright pop.
